Bye, Dad!

I just dropped my Dad off at the airport in Bozeman for his 7 AM flight home. It was really hard to say goodbye. We definitely had a great time together exploring the park, and I don't think I could pick a favorite thing that we did. I am so glad my Dad was able to come on the road trip with me and able to spend a week in Yellowstone and the Tetons. I know it was great for him because he had never been to this area of the country before and he got to see things he might never have seen otherwise. I am really sad that he is gone, and will really miss him. I probably won't see him or the rest of my family again until Thanksgiving, and that made it even harder to say goodbye. I am just really glad we got to spend these last two weeks together and will always remember this trip.

  1. Molly, the two weeks we spent together were a gift beyond description. You have taught me so much about the West and the outdoors. I can't thank you enough for the opportunity to share this time, and I'll carry the memories forever.

As I flew home yesterday, I kept replaying our time together in my mind: the intelligence and maturity you showed in handling your car repair in Georgia; the drive out to Wyoming after we finally got going; the Tetons hike, the raft trip, multiple days exploring the geyser basins, the day at the Canyon Rim, and the hikes around Mammoth - all of those unforgettable experiences.

More than that, just being able to spend time with you - all those wonderful conversations on the road, at dinner, and as we explored together. The fact we can't see you more than a couple of times a year is excruciating, but the memories you gave me will dull the pain.

Thank you for everything, enjoy your summer, work hard (okay, that was superfluous because you always do), and keep sharing your adventures in this terrific blog.

Thanks also to your incomparably loving and generous Mom. She made this trip possible for me, just as she's been the source of everything good in my life for the last 37 years.

    Love, jd

PS - Mom loved the gift, as I'm sure she'll tell you!
